Made in Columbus, OH USA
Over the last 10 years, as multi-national companies have moved much of their manufacturing overseas, our various State and Local Government Agencies have invested millions of dollars in their products, thereby shifting those potential tax dollars out of state, or even worse, out of the country. We are now realizing the effects of these decisions through downsized companies, layoffs, and possible closures altogether. Columbus Micro Systems is reaching out to local agencies to address the need to support local vendors. The money they spend and how they spend it has a significant impact on our state and our community.
Columbus Micro has manufactured quality PC’s and servers computers since 1988. We have 20 full time and part time employees. All of our products are assembled and configured in Columbus, Ohio. We have always competed with multi-national companies when they were producing their products in the Unites States but presently all multi-national companies that we compete with produce most, if not all, of their products overseas. To make matters worse, several agencies are now mandating Tier 1 manufacturers only. This mandate has little benefit to our state and local communities and it gives companies like ours no chance to bid.
The US Chamber of Commerce indicates that there is a 7x economic multiplier impact to every $1 spent. That means that the money is spent and re-spent seven times. When spent locally, a larger percentage stays in the community and you take greater advantage of the economic multiplier. For example, for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $45 stays in the local community, creating jobs and expanding the tax base. On the other hand, for every $100 spent with a multi-national corporation or national chain, only $14 remains in the community. A PC purchased from a multi-national company costing $1,000 will come ready to use from overseas. No value is added to it locally. In contrast, a PC purchased from Columbus Micro, and similar companies, is priced generally the same but the value breakdown is much different. Approximately 20% of the sales price stays with Columbus Micro for labor and profit and 30% goes to the U.S. based distributors that we source our components from. This means 50% of the revenue stays in the USA!
It’s a proven fact that small, local businesses like Columbus Micro are collectively, the largest employers and provide the most jobs nationwide. Economic research further shows that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. Make Columbus Micro your first choice for world class technology solutions and help us keep the stimulus dollars in Ohio and leverage the economic multiplier effect to realize its value. Do not do a disservice to our city by investing in technology manufactured overseas.
